The Valdosta State University Herbarium
The Valdosta State University Herbarium [VSC] is a regional collection of nearly 90,000 vascular plant, bryophyte and lichen specimens and is especially rich in plants of the Georgia coastal plain. Since 1985, the size of the collection has increased more than two-fold. Through funding from the National Science Foundation (DBI-1054366, DBI-1458264), the collection has been digitized, and voucher specimen label data and high-resolution images made publically available on-line through several web portals. As Director/Curator of the Herbarium, Dr Carter is involved with all aspects of herbarium work and supervision of undergraduate herbarium assistants, including maintaining the collection and sending and receiving research loans and exchange specimens to other herbaria. His activities also include routine identification of plant specimens for weed scientists and others, and providing data to other scientists. Valdosta State University Herbarium specimen images and data are publicly available via the following portals: VSU Virtual Herbarium, SERNEC, Consortium of Bryophyte Herbaria, and Consortium of Lichen Herbaria.
