About This Program

Achieving environmental sustainability requires us to understand how the solid earth (lithosphere), water (hydrosphere), atmosphere surrounding the earth, and living things (biosphere) interact and influence each other. As a student in the Environmental Sustainability option, you will study environmental science, ecology, resource management, environmental policy, as well as regional and urban planning so that you can understand and address the environmentalchallenges facing today’s society. We prepare you to pursue careers in environmental management, policymaking, conservation, advocacy, and research.

The Valdosta State Difference

Our students share a passion for studying climate change, environmental science, and sustainability. You will work closely with faculty mentors in a student-focused, supportive, and caring environment. We design degree programs to be flexible to accommodate your individual interests, such as the physical science of climate change and geographic information systems (GIS). Every student can conduct research with a faculty mentor, leading to an undergraduate thesis and formal presentations.

What You'll Learn

Students in this program receive a combination of theoretical learning and hands-on experiences through work in classes, labs, and in the field. Students learn to analyze complex environmental issues and develop sustainable practices that promote the long-term health of Earth’s environment. Our faculty share their knowledge with you so that you learn theory in the classroom then apply it in labs and the field. The interdisciplinary nature of the field equips graduates with a diverse set of skills and knowledge needed to contribute to a more sustainable future.
