CoSM Student Awards

Congratulations to the Spring 2020 Graduates and Student Honorees of the College of Science and Mathematics. We are proud of your accomplishments! And, to our graduating seniors, even though you are leaving VSU to blaze your own path, you will always be part of our Blazer family.

Meet some of our outstanding students and Spring 2020 Student Award Winners in the College of Science and Mathematics.

	Gregory Bohnhoff Award Received: Outstanding CIS Student Award Major: Computer Information Systems Minor: Aerospace Studies Activities: Cadet with AFROTC Detachment 172 Favorite class: Digital Forensics and Computer Graphics Career Goals: I will be graduating and commissioning this spring into the Air Force as a Second Lieutenant and will be a Cyberspace Operations Officer, and in the near future I will participate in Undergraduate Cyber Training, at Keesler AFB, Mississippi.
	Gena Cody Major: Biology Awards Received: Martha H. Barnes Scholarship, Biology Senior Award, and Marjorie Carter Award Activities: Zeta Tau Alpha, College Panhellenic Council, Baptist Collegiate Ministry, Pre-Vet club, undergraduate research and directed study in Neuron/Neurophysiology under the direction of Dr. Timothy Fort Favorite class: Neuroscience with Dr. Gannon Career Goals: I will be attending Veterinary School at the University of Georgia in the fall to earn my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. Afterwards, my goal is to pursue a career in mixed animal medicine and use my abilities to serve underprivileged areas.
	Michele Dowdy Major: Environmental Geosciences Award Received: Rising Geoscience Underclassman Award Activities: Geoscience Student Society, Spanish Club, and Fire Pit. Favorite class: Spanish 2001 Career Goals: Work for the EPA with the goal of working for the Foreign Service in diplomatic relations.
	Mehvish Durrani Major: Biology Awards Received: Outstanding Student in the College of Science and Mathematics and Biology Senior Award Activities: Various Research Presentations, President of Arabic Cultural Club, Beta Beta Beta Psi Phi Chapter, Student Members of the American Chemical Society, Honors Student Association. I also have volunteer service with the South Georgia Medical Center Emergency Room and the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) at VSU. Favorite class: Favorite non-STEM: Honors Narrative and Identity with Ms. Hanna. Favorite STEM(s): Molecular Biology with Dr. Kang, Developmental Biology with Dr. Calestani, Organic Chemistry with Dr. Barbas and Biochemistry lab with Dr. Woldman. Career Goals: I would like to go to medical school!
	Morgan Gasper Major: Middle Grades Education, Grades 4-8 Concentration: Mathematics Award Received: Gerald Petrella Award for Outstanding Student Achievement in Mathematics Education Activities: Japanese club, tutoring, the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS), and have volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club of Valdosta and the Help with Homework at the Southside Library. Favorite class: Serving Students with Diverse Needs (SPEC3000), Mathematics for Middle School Teachers (MATH3180), Fundamentals of Computer Applications (BUSA2201), and Fundamentals of Psychology (PSYC1101). Career Goals: Teach middle school Mathematics and provide multiple ways of interpreting and teaching the material so that all students can better understand it. I want to teach lessons and learning/memory tactics that students can use in their daily life.
	Ryan Johnson Major: Engineering Studies Award Received: Scruggs Scholarship Activities: Writing Tutor, Academic Support Center, Tutor African American Male Initiative, Vice President Comic Book Club, Creative Non-Fiction Editor Odradek, Hopper Hall Resident Assistant, Scholarship Chair/Parliamentarian, Sigma Lambda Beta, Member/Performer Society for International Students Favorite class: Either English 1101, English 1102 or Calculus 3 Career Goals: Work in Bio-Mechanical Engineering, and eventually Biomechatronics.
	Juliannie Hoare Major: Biology Award Received: Martha H. Barnes Scholarship Activities: Society of International Students, Honors Student Association, Latin American Student Association, and Rotaract. I was also a Resident Assistant, Orientation leader and was involved in Directed Research with Dr. Kang. Favorite class: Ecology and Evolution because Dr. Grabarczyk who incorporated case studies that related to the subject being taught, and the labs involved fieldwork outside in the local area. Career Goals: My final career goal is to go to Medical School and become a Pediatrician.
	Alex Morgan Major: Applied Mathematics Award Received: Mrs. Maya Goel Scholarship Activities: Mentor in the CoSM GUIDES Peer Mentoring Program Favorite class: Set Theory with Dr. Reid Career Goals: My plan after school at VSU is to pursue a master’s degree in Math with the goal of becoming an Actuary.
	Jessica Shores Major: Environmental Geosciences Award Received: Rising Geoscience Underclassman Award Favorite class: Introduction to Landforms, taught by Dr. Vincent and lab taught by Dr. Chatelain. Career Goals: My goal is to earn a Master's Degree in Oceanography at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa after I graduate from VSU.
	Abigail Spratling Major: Environmental Geosciences Award Received: Outstanding Student Award Activities: Undergraduate research with Dr. Thieme using Ground Penetrating Radar and submitted a GIS project to the Undergraduate Research Symposium under the guidance of Dr. Denizman Favorite class: Advanced GIS and Regional Planning, because both classes really informed me on what I want to do for a career. Career Goals: I am graduating this May, but am unsure of my plans yet. I am searching for a job, but I am also considering a Master's Degree here at VSU in Public Administration, which I will then use to pursue a career in City Planning.
	Winston Turner Major: Biology Award Received: Martha H. Barnes Scholarship Activities: Honors Student Association, and volunteer at the Drop-N-Shop on the first floor of the Student Union. Favorite class: Principles of Biology I (BIOL1107) with Dr. Cantonwine Career Goals: My career goal after I graduate is to attend medical school and become a Pediatrician.
	Natalie Vazquez-Torres Major: Biology Concentration: Pre-Medicine Award Received: Martha H. Barnes Scholarship Activities: Member of Alpha Delta Pi Favorite class: Biology 1107. It was a good start on my track to a B.S. in Biology, and my professor was great! Career Goals: After earning my degree, I plan on attending medical school to pursue my goal of becoming a Dermatologist.
	Autumn Wibright Major: Interdisciplinary Studies Award Received: Martha H. Barnes Scholarship Activities: Member of the Chamber Singers and Musical Union, Social Media Coordinator for Students Against Violating the Environment (S.A.V.E.), member of the Young Democrats of VSU, and local member of Tri-Beta. I’m a Chemistry tutor at the ASC, and I’m an Honors and Jennett Scholar. Favorite class: American Literature with Dr. Miller. Career Goals: I aspire to go to law school and become an Attorney in either Environmental, Civil Rights, or Family law. I have dreams of running for Senate after my career in law.
	Ebony N. Williams Major: Engineering Studies Awards Received: Outstanding Student in Engineering and Scruggs' Scholarship Activities: Intramural soccer, Blazin' Brigade, AFROTC, Arnold Air Society, Kpop Dance Club Favorite class: AS 2002 Career Goals: Commission into the United States Air Force, have a successful career, and retire after 20 years of service.
