Welcome to Odum Library of Valdosta State University.  This guide is intended for visitors who are not affiliated with Valdosta State University, but who wish use the Library’s collections and/or facilities. Visitors are welcome to use the Library's collections for research and study purposes. These materials include collections housed in Library stacks; government documents; reference collections; current periodicals and newspapers, except those held on reserve; and microform collections. Unless they are registered as community borrowers, visitors may only use Library resources in-house. Depository collections of U.S. government publications, and assistance in using them, are freely available to all visitors. With the exception of the U.S. Government Documents depository collections, the Library may at times give priority in service to University-affiliated users, and may limit visitors' access to selected facilities, collections, and services. 

Building Access

Access to the Odum Library is granted to any person age 16 or older. Per University policy, visitors under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian at all times.

Odum Library is primarily for use by students, faculty, staff and other members of the Valdosta State University community. Researchers and scholars not affiliated with Valdosta State University, however, may utilize the library's collections under the guidelines set forth below and shall follow the acceptable use guidelines.

Access is only granted during the building's operating hours.

Borrowing Materials

Visitors who are interested in borrowing books may apply for a community borrower card. Alumni are also able to borrow materials and can have their account activated by contacting the Main Circulation Desk.

Electronic resources such as online indexes, e-journals, and e-books can only be accessed in the library at the community computers for community and alumni patrons.

Visitors from Other University System of Georgia Academic Institutions 

You are welcome to use the library and may check out materials through GIL Express.

Computing and Online Resources

Visitors are welcome to use the public computers behind the Reference Desk on the second floor.

These computers allow access to the library's online catalog, GALILEO, Valdosta State University Websites, and government websites. Visitors may also use these computers to access all databases subscribed to by Odum Library.

To use Valdosta State University's wireless network (VSU-WiFi) as a visitor, you will need to create a guest account. Please see the IT's How To page or visit the Help Desk for information on how to log in to VSU-Guests Wifi. 

Services Not Available to Visitors

The following services are not available to Library visitors:

  • Interlibrary loan (ILLiad)
  • Course reserve materials
  • Most workstations and computer software
  • Data restricted by licensing agreements
  • Recall of materials checked out by others
  • New Media Center use
  • Photocopying machines
