Movie Night Comes To The VSO March 14

VALDOSTA — The horror. The tragedy. The comedy. The spectacle.

The Valdosta Symphony Orchestra’s next performance will feature highlights from the silent era’s most beloved films — the flickers.

The Valdosta Symphony Orchestra (VSO) will present the special concert, Flicker: Symphonic Celebration of the Silent Age, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, in Whitehead Auditorium.

Tickets are $27 for adults and $10 for students. Discounted tickets are available for senior citizens, military personnel, and Valdosta State University faculty and staff.

Reservations are required.

Throughout the evening, the VSO will perform Night on Bald Mountain by Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky; Danse Macabre, Op. 40 by Camille Saint-Saëns; Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46 by Edvard Grieg; Finlandia, Op. 26 by Jean Sibelius; and Firebird Suite Infernal Dance and Finale by Igor Stravinsky to high definition movie excerpts.

Flicker is part of the Film Score in Reverse Series, produced by Video Ideas Productions. It features excerpts from such silent classics as Metropolis, Fritz Lang’s 1927 expressionist sci-fi classic; Nosferatu, F.W. Murnau’s 1922 vampire thriller; Out West, Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle’s 1918 Western spoof; Phantom of the Opera, Lon Chaney’s 1925 portrayal of the legendary fiend; The Tramp, Charles Chaplin’s 1915 bitter-sweet comedy; A Trip to the Moon, George Méliès’s 1902 sci-fi adventure; Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the 1920 John Barrymore shocker; Faust, the 1926 version of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s classic story; The General, Buster Keaton’s 1927 locomotive laugh fest; Hunchback of Notre Dame, Lon Chaney’s 1923 portrayal of Victor Hugo’s tragic monster; and Intolerance, D.W. Griffith’s 1916 epic masterpiece.

“Each scene is designed to play back at a particular place in the music that matches the mood and pace of the music,” according to information provided by the VSO. “The audience has the experience of an incredible cinematic movie in high definition sequenced precisely to the orchestra’s live performance of the music.”

Dr. Howard Hsu, conductor and VSO music director, said that Flicker: Symphonic Celebration of the Silent Age promises to be a fun-filled evening for music and film fans of all ages, “a great introduction to the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra for first-timers.”

Whitehead Auditorium is located on the first floor of the VSU Fine Arts Building, at the intersection of Brookwood Drive and Oak Street.
