Cathy Sowa, IT
It was my first day working from home and my remote desktop was not working. Ms. Cathy helped me until everything was working. She even followed up to make sure I was still okay. I am beyond grateful for her patience.
Dr. Julie Bowland, Art & Design
Dr. Bowland attended a grade book open office session in which she spent 50 minutes sorting through grades and brainstorming different options and strategies for her students to demonstrate mastery of content; particularly those who were struggling. In a time like the one we are in, in which a pandemic has negatively impacted us all, her steadfast desire to see her students succeed is admirable! It was an absolute pleasure to work with her and I'm happy students have the privilege of working with her. Thanks for your student-centered approach, Dr. Bowland! It's a great example for us all!
Jordan Thompson, Bursary
Jordan was very professional and helpful. She let me know the details of filing a military Tuition Assistance Form and helped me throughout the process.
Britt Bugby, Center for eLearning
Britt Bugby walked me through the creation of my first online quiz. She returned numerous emails, called me at home, and helped me think through several possible scenarios. Her background as an English teacher helped her understand my pedagogical goals and the system's ability to meet those goals. Beyond just her technological expertise, Ms. Bugby's calmness and sense of humor made the experience enjoyable.
Carrie Yarbrough, Human Resources
Carrie kindly and expertly prepared a fillable PDF document for us to help us process certain forms more quickly than usual. Her generosity is greatly appreciated by all of us in the department!
Carl Brown, IT
Carl provided exceptional customer service this week and helped me get the admissions office situated with new office equipment. He made sure everyone was taken care of before closing out any work orders or going home. His customer service is some of the best I have seen! Really proud to call him a co-worker. Keep being awesome Carl!
Mary Ann Redhage, COEHS Advising Center
I transitioned to being an online student due to being involved in 3 car accidents. My grades slipped due to my accidents, and I almost lost hope in my entire college career. Ms. Redhage was so understanding, compassionate, and helpful. She never made me feel bad about my struggles. She encouraged me to take care of my health first and then my education. She really helped me push forward and be successful again. She was so kind to always check up on me and always have a positive attitude. Thank you so much.
Jennifer Griffin, Bursary
I cannot thank Jennifer enough for the service that she provided to me and my family. Jennifer approved us for a short term loan so that my son could attend school. Without her help, my son would not have been able to attend VSU. She treated us in such a professional manner and made us feel Important and that she cared about our needs. The world would be a much better place if there were more people like Jennifer.
Morgan Clawson, Center for eLearning
I had been using zoom and was reluctant to try Ultra as an online platform-I do not like learning via webinars which are impersonal. I emailed Morgan and she immediately reached out with a phone number and a link to her office in Ultra. She spent over 40 minutes letting me go step by step and practicing and feeling comfortable with the virtual learning platform. She was very encouraging, friendly and offered to meet as much as needed. So thankful for her and Danny Smith and others who are helping in this time of mandatory virtual teaching.
Carl Brown, IT
Carl worked diligently in the transition and set up for the new Career Opportunities space in the Student Union. Carl provided accommodations to our requests and ensured all things were set up as needed. He did all of this without complaining and working tirelessly for weeks. Carl is an integral component of this University and we thank him for all he has done and continues to do for us!
Njeri Pringle, Academic Support Center
Njeri has always put in 110% of her effort into teaching us, being patient, and always having a bright smile to be around at the Academic Support Center. For our staff meetings, she is sure to include an icebreaker that either makes us feel intrigued, interested, or jolly.
Dr. Deborah Robson, Communication Arts
Deborah has gone above and beyond her responsibilities due to all classes switching to online. She has called to check in on students, worked to make sure they have the technology they need to finish up the semester, made sure students had access to materials required and been available to individual students to talk to during these uncertain times.
Dennis Conway, Mass Media
Dennis Conway went above and beyond his responsibility as the chair of a thesis committee. He has helped the students navigate the paperwork that is needed by the graduate school. He helped ease student anxiety with everything shifting to an online/digital process for the program over the past month.
Dr. Knicole Lee, School of Nursing
I would like to thank Dr. Lee for going above and beyond assisting students that were displaced by their clinical agencies due to COVID-19 in finding alternate clinical placements. Without her assistance, students would not have been able to complete the clinical hours needed to meet course objectives this semester.
Robert Freidhoff, University Advising
I was having problems getting some help for one of my students on my concierge list. I reached out to Rob and he worked tirelessly to get me the help and the information I need. Thank you, Robert.
Brenda Kelley, Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice
I can’t thank Brenda Kelly enough for all the help she typically provides to myself and to students. During the transition to online courses, however, she has gone above and beyond. She’s the best!
Ashley Cooper, Employee & Organizational Development
I really appreciate Ashley's assistance in preparing the bi-annual cybersecurity training module. Ashley worked diligently to create a custom training module at the request of the Information Security team, including multiple calls with the training platform vendor to resolve issues with the course as it was being built. With her help, IT was able to successfully meet the USG's expectations for training during the month of April. Thank you, Ashley, from the InfoSec team!
Morgan Clawson, Center for eLearning
I needed some help modifying my online class grade book. After emailing IT, Ms. Clawson called me within minutes and quickly enabled me to make the needed changes in my grade book. She was friendly and helpful (I am NOT the most technically advanced teacher employed by VSU!). I later called her back about a second issue and, voila, she again came through quickly, efficiently, and with a smile on her voice.
Obediah Hall, CELT
The eLearning team has been hard at work assisting staff and faculty in getting courses up and running in BlazeVIEW during this historical time. However, eLearning would not be as successful without the backbones of the team, Sherry and Obi. They have assisted team members in getting set up to work remotely, create tickets for faculty and staff so questions are answered quickly, work diligently to answer online learning questions themselves, and are often the first calm and caring voice one hears when calling eLearning with an issue. Sherry and Obi, we appreciate everything you do to keep our team afloat and comfort everyone during the storm!
Sherry Turner, Center for eLearning

Marsha Walden, COHUSS Advising Center
Marsha took additional time out of her already busy schedule during registration week to find a solution for an issue that my students were facing. She was able to advocate for students she had not interacted with or met purely based on their needs as students, even though they were not within her college. This is a perfect example of a VSU employee being thoughtful and putting the needs of EVERY student first. Thank you so much, Marsha. Your help is appreciated by so many.
Danielle Costello, Library
Danielle contacted me after the announcement was made to shut down the university, with a way to put the spring Undergraduate Research Symposium online. She put together a team of experts and they began to create the virtual experience for students. This amazing collaboration allowed the Undergraduate Research Council to move forward and, in the end, we were able to run a poster session, a PowerPoint session, and a webinar that featured 134 projects in, what became a global event. Danielle's dynamic leadership created new features and joined the Access Office to our project. She showed not only advanced technical skills but calm and organized leadership skills. Her ability to multitask and collaborate with multiple departments was essential to our success. Danielle has continued to work on placing the Symposium into the VSU archives. The quick-thinking and innovation of Danielle and the tech team is an example of what university communities can accomplish when dedicated and motivated individuals are given the freedom to follow their passions and exhibit their skills. This inter-departmental collaboration is a testament to VSU's mission and to the community we can offer students. I want to thank Danielle for the hundreds of volunteer hours she willingly, and with great humor, gave to the virtual Symposium. It couldn't have been done without you.
Michael Holt, Library
I would like to thank Michael for the hundreds of hours he volunteered in setting up and running the technology during our Symposium. His technical skills and leadership helped us achieve our global status and our university-wide success. Michael joined our collaboration shortly after the announcement that we would need to shut down the campus. He offered his technical skills, his blackboard room, and his online conference abilities to run the tech during the Symposium. His calm leadership saw us through tornado and storm interruptions of the internet and helped us troubleshoot new platforms to make the Symposium interactive. His work with the Access office allowed the Symposium to be accessible and his friendly guidance of students helped them present themselves well in our first ever webinar. His efforts were a clear example of VSU's mission and potential for interdepartmental collaboration. One of the many wonderful experiences for me was getting to work with Michael and the tech team in a way that I, being completely without tech ability, could just allow them to create what they knew they could, which allowed me to focus on the students and other aspects of the event. Michael and the team made it easy to simply turn over the tech aspects of the Symposium so I could focus elsewhere. In addition to the continued creativity, Michael helped gather assessment information that showed our global movement along with the number of people who viewed each event. This information has not only been fun to have but will be useful. The students were excited to know they had gone global. I want to thank Michael for his dedication to VSU, our students, and to our Symposium. The event could not have been a success without your efforts.
Kyle Culpepper, New Media Center
Kyle was part of our Tech Dream Team for this year's Symposium. Kyle and the New Media Center have been partnered with the Undergraduate Research Symposium in the past and he was enthusiastic about creating the virtual Symposium, which meant changing all of the preparations he had already put in place. Kyle's skills and his willingness to help VSU students are always a major factor in the Symposium's success and this year was no different. Kyle volunteered countless hours to help put the Symposium online and to untangle student projects when their tech failed. He even managed a bit of magic on a project that several people spent days trying to fix. The project simply would not format correctly and Kyle's skills allowed him to untangle the project and put it in a form that the student could present. Kyle's dedication to VSU and our mission along with interdepartmental collaboration has always impressed me and I wasn't surprised that he was willing to take on this challenge and these extra duties. His ability to calm students and to help them assess and fix difficult situations makes him a great mentor. His support of students making videos, posters, and power points has always added professionalism to the Symposium. I want to thank him for his added dedication to our partnership and note that his sense of humor was part of what made this transition a great deal of fun. Thank you for all you do and I look forward to our future collaborations.
Jessie Whitten, Library
I would like to thank Jessie for the countless hours of work for the Symposium that most people didn't realize she did. Jessie worked to create the advertising for the Symposium that was both creative and essential for getting out our web links. What most people don't know is that Jessie did a great deal behind the scenes that moved the Symposium to a higher professional level. Jessie made FAQ informational material to help guide people through the Symposium. She also created the informational slides for the webinar that helped with organization and flow in those events. Jessie also worked on tech supporting the webinars, posters, and PowerPoint sessions. So, in many ways, Jessie was the wizard behind the curtain taking care of the many details that allowed the Symposium to be a success. Her quiet dedication to the VSU mission, students, and the Symposium would be easy to miss if one wasn't paying attention. However, it was the attention to detail that helped us look as though the virtual Symposium had been planned for months. Jessie's dedication and skill allowed us to show VSU in a professional light to our campus community, to family and friends, and on the national and international scale. With thousands of hits to our sites, Jessie's attention to the smallest of details really made VSU shine. I want to thank you for all your effort and for the flurry of emails we shared in getting this together.
Laura Byers, Access Office
A special thanks to Laura, Kelly, and Rencia for their work to make our Symposium accessible. They were willing to jump in and volunteer their skills at the last minute to help us advance the professionalism and accessibility of our webinar and video projects. Their collaboration with Danielle Costello and Michael Holt allowed us to create multi-screen accessibility to people wanting to join our conversations. They have continued to work on captioning the Symposium projects for our archives. This is a collaboration we intend to continue in the future. I can't thank you all enough for jumping in at the last minute and working with us and with our students to create this event. Your kindness and compassion for students embodies our VSU mission. Thank you for making this event such a success.

Doug Jordan, IT
Doug Jordan displayed a willingness to go way above and beyond the scope of his normal duties. I came on campus to participate in several virtual meetings but unfortunately did not realize until minutes before my first meeting that I had forgotten my charging cord. I only had 10% battery life remaining. I called the IT helpdesk but they were unable to assist. I happened to be on the phone with the Employee Relations Manager in HR, venting about my oversight. Upon hearing of the issue, Doug Jordan found a cord and brought it to my office in less than 10 minutes. His efforts allowed me to continue with my schedule and my meetings. Since then, I have heard of multiple other instances whereby he has supported users in this same fashion. He truly set a standard.
Renee Whitmer, College of Education and Human Services
Ms. Whitmer has been incredibly helpful in helping me navigate the post-graduation certification process for school teachers. She has been super responsive. She helped ensure I completed all documents correctly and submitted everything I would need to become certified. During the craziness of COVID-19, she helped ease a lot of stress I was feeling and I am thankful for her dedication and hard work!
Morgan Clawson, Center for eLearning
Morgan has responded immediately with answers and suggestions to questions regarding online courses. She has been supportive, positive, and pleasant in all of her interactions. Her assistance and attitude are so appreciated!
Morgan Clawson, Center for eLearning
Morgan was wonderful in assisting with the move of my courses online! She was helpful, very generous with her time, and always willing to answer questions. She is a real asset to the university!
John Hall, IT
When I called the IT helpdesk for my computer problem, John Hall was very nice and patient regarding my computer issues. He spent about 50 minutes of his time to research online and tried multiple ways to help me. He also called back several times after he talked to other offices to coordinate the support. His friendliness and diligence are super appreciated during this pandemic.
Daniel Smith, Center for eLearning
I have contacted Daniel Smith and other members of VSU IT several times to ask questions about online teaching with Collaborate Ultra and other subjects. Daniel has been extremely helpful, knowledgeable, patient, and pleasant. He has also been easily accessible. He and his wonderful IT personnel have been great resources to me and they have made online teaching with Blackboard Ultra very easy for me. They are a great asset to VSU, particularly to VSU faculty, and they deserve positive recognition. Thanks, Daniel.
Neal Culbreth, Bursary
Mr. Culbreth has been very helpful, especially due to the fact that COVID-19 has changed operations at the university. He always responds in a timely manner! He should be commended for his exemplary service to the parents and students!
Barrie Fitzgerald, Institutional Research
The Office of Institutional Research has been doing an excellent job providing information for the required forms for a grant. Their service has been prompt and reliable and they have been very patient in collaborating with us. Thank you to Barrie Fitzgerald because we know we can count on you.
Nijah Bryant, Institutional Research
The Office of Institutional Research has been doing an excellent job providing information for the required forms for a grant. Their service has been prompt and reliable and they have been very patient in collaborating with us. Thank you to Nijah Bryant because we know we can count on you.
Carl Brown, IT
While working remotely, I had issues logging in, which had been ongoing. Carl contacted me Friday to help. When we weren't making any headway he called after hours and suggested I come in the following Monday to pick up a different laptop from Media Services. That Monday, he met me there to ensure I received everything I needed to help make this a smooth process. I really appreciate the extra effort he took to make sure I had what I needed.
Dr. Lavonna Lovern, Philosophy and Religion
Dr. Lavonna Lovern managed to put together and pull off an online symposium that involved hundreds of students on short notice. With VSU closed and many people working remotely, there were significant obstacles to overcome. There was no blueprint, but Dr. Lovern did a great job! Kudos for saving the day!
Rebecca Petrella, Graduate Studies and Research
Rebecca helped expedite program applications to academic departments during our office's teleworking due to COVID-19. She also assisted with faculty communications during a time when our department had very limited resources to move our physical process faster. Though Rebecca had her own responsibilities to manage, she went above and beyond to assist me and more importantly our future students in getting students where they needed to be sooner than originally anticipated. Staff like Rebecca make working at VSU feel like a community with members who support each other. I cannot thank her enough for keeping the people we serve in focus. It's more appreciated than she knows.
Britt Bugby, Center for eLearning
Learning to use Blazeview and Teams in the rush of the pandemic move from face-to-face to online teaching was overwhelming at times-especially for a self-professed technofobe like me. No matter what time or day of the week I called or emailed, Britt responded swiftly, kindly, with humor, and encouragement. She helped to diffuse my stress and never once made me feel as inept as I was really feeling. She undid my errors and taught me new and more efficient ways to do things. I learned so much so fast from her that it bordered on miraculous. There aren't enough words to thank her.
Dr. Becky da Cruz, Graduate Studies and Research
Dr. Becky da Cruz is an administrator that is willing to "get in the trenches" with her staff. She has been on campus regularly throughout social distancing and has learned processes on-the-fly in order to assist her staff with completing work. She takes time to understand processes in as much detail as possible and helps to find ways to do any part she can to make the workload lighter. I appreciate any and all help she gives us, especially as our unit was in the middle of transitioning from a physical process to a digital one before health safety measures had to begin. She has done everything she can to help us keep files moving through the application process.
Michael Anderson, IT
Michael did an amazing job of walking me through Teams online. It was my first experience with collaborative software and I was terrified. I was in contact with him as soon as the move from face-to-face teaching was confirmed in March. No matter when I called or emailed, he responded quickly. He was very affirming and encouraging when I really needed it. There was a great deal to learn and I learned it because he was so very helpful, patient, and kind. He knew his stuff and, on the rare occasions when I came up with an unusual question he couldn't answer, he was honest about it, contacted someone who knew the answer, and got back to me quickly with the answers. The pandemic shift was a very stressful time for me and he really helped to diffuse that stress and enabled me to enjoy learning about and using Teams.I am so grateful for all his guidance.
Wade Bugby, IT
When I had a situation that was more IT than eLearning, Britt would give the phone to Wade. He talked me through some technical problems and did so kindly, efficiently, and positively regardless of the day or time. I never felt like I was an imposition. He, too, was affirming and encouraging. I deeply appreciate his expertise and kindness. Together, Britt and Wade have been a superpower team in the midst of the pandemic chaos. I am grateful to both of them!
Amanda Thompson, Housing and Residence Life
Amanda has been extremely helpful in planning and implementing plans surrounding COVID-19. She really has taken the initiative on some things that needed to be done and removed them from my plate. I appreciate her and her willingness to jump in and get things done. I also appreciate how she thinks outside of the box and comes up with new ideas that can help us as we continue to plan.
Neal Culbreth, Bursary
Neal was incredibly responsive concerning my daughter's payment status. Neal responded quickly and was a great help. I know this isn't much, but his quick replies were a great comfort to me and my family, as we are going through some tough times.
Daniel Smith, Center for eLearning
I was unsuccessful at course copy for my recorded lectures, despite research of the issue and numerous attempts. I contacted eLearning and requested assistance. Within minutes, Daniel called me back. He took the time to listen to my problem and then immediately began working to find a solution, and resolved my issue he did! Daniel's assist released a truckload of stress! Thank you Daniel for your expertise, assistance, and pleasant personality!
Deborah Tillman, Registrar
Deborah, although busy with countless other tasks, took additional time to help me with not just one, but two registration issues with graduate students. She went above and beyond, because she tried to contact another department/person for me, while I waited on the phone. Deborah then gave me information on how to best proceed. Thank you for your patience and kind phone conversation on an otherwise busy Monday morning.
Jennifer Griffin, Bursary
She gave me a quick response concerning an old fine I had with the school. Usually, it takes days for someone to get back to you especially through email.
Markaysa Robinson, IT
Markaysa helped me tremendously with updates and fixes that were essential for me to continue online instruction from home during the pandemic. She came to campus to meet me several times, was very diligent and attentive with the task, and always went above and beyond to check that everything was working correctly; if it wasn't, she very kindly offered to come back and fix it. In these stressful and strange times, she was professional, cheerful, kind, and generous with her time. I am so thankful to her for her great work and willingness to help.
Douglas Carlson, Archives
Mr. Carlson looked up an obituary for me in the Valdosta Daily Times. This obituary helped me fill in some gaps in one particular family.
Daniel Smith, Center for eLearning
I was having problems posting lecture videos in my summer class. Students could not access the assignment and I could not access their grade. I was at a loss of how to fix it and Daniel worked tirelessly for several hours to find the root of the problem to create a solution, even working with the vendor of the video posting product to help me find a solution to make it work for the class. I know it had to be frustrating for him, but his great attitude and work ethic are greatly appreciated.
Dr. Brian Ring, Biology
I kept having roadblocks as I was trying to learn to make videos for my classes. When I told Brian, he immediately said that he would hold a meeting in Collaborate and show me. The next day he invited me to a Collaborate meeting. In the meeting, he shared his screen to show me how to create and use videos and helped me as I made my own during our meeting. It was the most productive 1.5 hours I have had in a long time!
Dr. Jenifer Turco, Biology
Dr. Turco came into the Bailey Science Center amid COVID-19 to help me and my colleague, Dr. Pengpeng Bi from the UGA Center for Molecular Medicine and Department of Genetics, snap freeze organ tissue samples from our Atlantic hagfish. We had to do this for a genetic analysis of muscle development and it wouldn't have been possible if Dr. Turco hadn't kindly donated some of her liquid nitrogen. Thanks also to Dr. Grove for the loan of your Dewar flask!
