Servicemember Policies

As a signatory member DoD Voluntary Education MOU, Valdosta State University is committed to maintaining policies and procedures that recognize the special circumstances that face those in uniform. Those referenced specifically include:

  • The intent of the US Department of Education Readmission policy as it applies to Servicemembers is to ensure that they are not penalized academically or financially for active duty. VSU fully supports this policy. The specific details are available at the US Government Publishing Office's Electronic Code of Federal Regulations under Title 34 -- Subtitle B -- Chapter VI -- Part 668 -- Subpart B -- §668.18 (linked here)
  • Credit for Prior Learning. Servicemembers are afforded the same opportunity to earn college credits through the Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) program as are all other students. Additional information may be found in the Credit for Prior Learning section of the VSU catalog in the PLA website.

Joint Service Transcript (JST) and Prior College Credit Evaluation

Joint Service Transcripts (JST) are evaluated upon application to Valdosta State University by the Admissions Department.  Initial credit is granted based upon completion of basic training and service related leadership.  The student’s JST will be evaluated a second time for any additional credits by their advisor when they have selected their major and begin their upper level coursework.

Students will be permitted to transfer academic credits earned with grades of “D” or better at other accredited institutions and apply them towards degree requirements in the Core Curriculum or lower division if allowed by the department. Credits with the grade of “D” or better in upper division work will be transferred, and the department of the student’s major will determine if those credits are acceptable toward a degree.

Please note that VSU accepts a maximum of 90 total semester hours in transfer. Additionally, of the 40 semester hours immediately preceding graduation, at least 30 must be taken in residence at VSU.

A NOTE TO MILITARY STUDENTS

Active Duty Military needs to show proof of approval from their command Educational Services Officer (ESO) to enroll in courses. Please be sure to meet with your assigned advisor in advance of registration.
