VSU: What are some highlights from your Valdosta State experience?

ALLEN: My time at Valdosta State University was filled with unforgettable experiences. One of the highlights was engaging in research, which allowed me to apply what I was learning to hands-on applications. I was also in the honors program. The honors program pushed me academically and made me a better learner. I also made lifelong friends during my years at VSU. My husband and I got married while I attended VSU. Our shared experiences have created a strong foundation for our relationship. I studied abroad while at VSU. I went to Bonn, Germany, for a summer semester. We traveled to many incredible countries. I visited Rome, Italy; Paris, France; Normandy, France; and Amsterdam, Netherlands. It was an amazing experience. Being the president of the Pre-Dental Club was another significant highlight. It allowed me to develop leadership skills, connect with peers who shared my interests, and organize events that enriched our understanding of dentistry. I also have great memories of attending football games, where the spirit of the VSU community was palpable. Participating in an intramural volleyball league as part of the "Tooth Fairies" team added a fun and lighthearted element to my college experience, providing a balance to my academic pursuits. Overall, my time at VSU shaped both my professional and personal life in meaningful ways.

VSU: Tell us how you currently spend your time.

ALLEN: I work at North Valdosta Dental Care. It’s a rewarding role that allows me to connect with patients and contribute to their oral health. My family and I attend Crossroads Baptist Church, where I volunteer with the Children’s Ministry. I’m also active in the dental community as the president-elect of the Southwestern District Dental Association, which is part of the Georgia Dental Association. Additionally, I serve on the Board of Trustees and House of Delegates for the Georgia Dental Association, working to support and advocate for dental professionals in our region. My husband, a certified public accountant at Tillman & Tillman, and I have three wonderful children — Bryce (6), Wyatt (4), and Carlie Beth (2). The boys attend Scintilla Charter Academy, where I’m a PTO member and volunteer, helping to foster a strong school community. In my free time, I love to read and cherish moments spent with my children, whether it’s playing games, exploring outdoors, or enjoying family movie nights. Balancing work, family, and community service keeps me engaged and fulfilled.

VSU: What advice do you have for current Valdosta State students? What do you wish someone had told you when you were in college?

ALLEN: My advice for current Valdosta State students is to truly savor your time in college. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of all the resources and learning opportunities available at VSU, whether it’s academic support, research projects, or networking events. These experiences can significantly enhance your education and open doors for your future. Be proactive in seeking out mentorship and building relationships with faculty and peers. These connections can provide invaluable guidance and support as you navigate your academic and professional paths. I would also encourage students to consider studying abroad if they have the opportunity. It’s a unique chance to immerse yourself in a different culture, broaden your perspective, and enhance your academic experience. Living and studying in a new environment can be transformative, helping you develop valuable skills like adaptability and cross-cultural communication. I wish someone would have told me to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth — each experience, whether good or bad, contributes to your personal development. Enjoy every moment, because these years will shape who you become.
