VSU Presents Final Choral Concert of the Season April 22 at Park Avenue UMC

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University’s Women’s Choir, Men’s Choir, Spotlighters, and Chamber Singers will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 22, at Park Avenue United Methodist Church. Admission is free, and the concert is open to the public.

Dr. Paul A. Neal, an associate professor in the university’s Department of Music and director of choral activities, shared, “The acoustics at Park Avenue United Methodist Church are perfect for a choir concert. We enjoy singing in the different churches in town for a different performing experience and to take our song to other parts of the community.”

Monday’s concert will begin with the newly formed Women’s Choir and Men’s Choir. Each will perform three works by such artists as Jay Althouse, Moses Hogan, Mark Hayes, Michael Praetorius, Kevin A. Memley, and Alice Parker and Robert Shaw.

“Both of these choirs are new to VSU,” Neal noted, “and we are excited that they will be performing on our program.”

The Spotlighters will follow, performing a selection of popular songs, including “Man in the Mirror” and “Somebody That I Used To Know.”

The Chamber Singers, the premier auditioned choral group at VSU, will close out the evening with high level choral music by Randall Thompson, Morten Lauridsen, Roy Ringwald, and Shawn L. Kirchner.

“This is the final concert of the semester,” Neal said. “The students have worked hard on their performances. Repertoire is a variety of music to celebrate our year together. From spirituals to folksongs, it will be a fun evening.”
