VSU Blazers Recognized by Georgia Assembly

VALDOSTA - Valdosta State University was honored by the Georgia General Assembly with three joint resolutions that recognized the 2007 NCAA Division II National Championship football team, Head Coach David Dean, and President Ronald M. Zaccari. The joint resolutions were read on the floors of both the Senate and House chambers on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008.

The 2007 national championship football team, coaches, and staff joined Zaccari at the State Capitol in Atlanta, as the Blazers were honored for winning their second NCAA Division II football championship and third title game appearance in six years. Dean was also recognized as only the second NCAA Division II head coach to lead a team to a national championship in his first season and for his superior coaching abilities as the Blazers completed a 13-1 season.

In honor of his retirement, Zaccari received accolades from the General Assembly for his exemplary service to VSU and higher education. Zaccari will retire as VSU’s seventh president on June 30, 2008. During his six-year tenure he launched an intensive strategic planning process that has secured approximately $263 million in capital construction, including residence halls, a health sciences and business administration facility, student union, student health center, and two multilevel parking facilities.
