Materials and Equipment:

http://www.valdosta.edu/~tajames/global2.html

2. Multicultural children’s book: Why the Sun and the Moon Live in the Sky by Elphinstone Dayrell and illustrated by Blair Lent

3. Globe to review country or continent they are learning about

4. For the hands on activity, the students will make masks.  For this activity, the students will use paper plates, glue, pieces of yarn or strips of construction paper, and different colored shapes cut from construction paper.

Technology Connection

Technologies that will be used in this lesson include: computer with Internet connection, a cultural graphic organizer displayed on the teacher’s web site with links to 3 websites that give information about the culture of the country in the multicultural children's literature book.  Students will use the mouse to find information and view the websites selected by the teacher.

Procedure:

Step One Introduction:

1. Show students the graphic organizer developed as a PowerPoint slide.  Say: “Yesterday we read a book about Africa”.

Show them the globe and ask if anyone can find Georgia, the US, and the place where the story took place, Africa.

2. Explain to the students that we are going to learn more about the place where the story took place.

3. Look at the graphic organizer (PowerPoint) and discuss the picture representations of the culture that they will be learning about:

             Food, Clothing, and Language

4. Read each culture question under the graphic organizer (or on the graphic organizer) and ask a student to click on the icon below to find the information

a. What kind of food do people in Africa eat?

http://www.gateway-africa.com/food/.htm

b. What kind of clothing do people in Africa wear?

http://www.rebirth.co.za/traditional_african_clothing.htm

c. What different languages do people in Africa speak?

http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/african_languages.htm

5.  Go over the information on the web site with the children, and allow students to respond or make comments about what they see.  Allow students to take turns using the mouse to click on the links and read information or provide directions for them as they look at the web sites together.

(Estimated Time 10-15 minutes)

Step Two Reinforcement Hands-On Activity

1. Tell the children:

Now that we have visited the websites, and learned about the culture of Africa, we are going to do an activity that relates to the culture of the people in our story.

2. Tell the children:

Africa is famous for the traditional masks that the people of the country may wear. We also saw different masks in our story.  Today, we are going to make our own mask.  We will use our paper plates, cut out eye holes, glue different construction paper shapes and/or pieces of yarn and/or pieces of construction paper strips to the paper plates to make the masks. (Estimated time 15 – 30 minutes depending on the project)

(You will need to save the students’ pictures and projects, or take pictures of them in the activity.  Avoid photographing their faces.

Later you will add the photos to your web page as examples of the children's work.
