Support/ Therapy Groups: Spring 2018

Groups are open to students, they meet weekly and they are ongoing throughout the semester. For more information about group counseling including what to expect from your experience please see Support Group Information. Thera-Prov

Thera-Prov This group blends therapy with improvisation in a unique group format. The improvisation exercises are designed to help students feel empowered in their own lives, while providing a sense of social connection. This group works well for students experiencing stress, worry, an inner “critic”, or difficulty adapting in social situations. If you’d like to participate, you MUST sign-up in advance by contacting The Counseling Center at (229) 333-5940.  Ms. Heidi O'Connor, Licensed Professional Counselor, facilitates this group.  Group meeting date will be determined for Spring semester. 

Connection

This group is for anyone looking to learn how to establish and deepen connections at VSU and in life. If you'd like to participate, you MUST sign-up in advance by contacting The Counseling Center at (229) 333-5940.  Mr. Bradford Coleman, Licensed Associate Professional Counselor, facilitates this group.  Group meeting date will be determined for Spring semester. 

Compass

Compass This DBT group utilizes structured therapeutic process to encourage emotional well-being, healthy relationship building, mindfulness, and effective stress management among students who struggle with navigating through the challenges of life. If you'd like to participate, you MUST sign-up in advance by contacting The Counseling Center at (229)333-5940.  Ms. Caitlin Connolly, Licensed Master Social Worker, facilitates this group.  Group meeting date will be determined for Spring semester. 

Breaking Free

Are you escaping a chaotic home environment? Have you been left guessing what "normal" looks like? This is a support group designed to help students impacted by a parent or guardians' use of substances, gambling, or other addictive behaviors. If you'd like to participate, you MUST sign-up in advance by contacting The Counseling Center at (229)333-5940. Mr. Mark Williams, MHR, ICAADC, facilitates this group.  Group meeting date will be determined for Spring semester. 

Horizon

This group is for those who want to learn from, support, and connect with students who balance career, parenting, disability, returning to school, or different life stage.  If you'd like to participate, you MUST sign-up in advance by contacting The Counseling Center at (229) 333-5940.  Mr. Bradford Coleman, Licensed Associate Professional Counselor, facilitates this group.  Group meeting date will be determined for Spring semester. 

Grief Group

Our grief support group provide a safe environment for you to look at your old beliefs about dealing with loss, which losses have affected your life, and take actions that will lead you to complete unresolved emotions that may still be causing you pain. If you'd like to participate, you MUST sign-up in advance by contacting The Counseling Center at (229) 333-5940.  Ms. Holly Wright, Licensed Professional Counselor, facilitates this group. Group meeting date will be determined for Spring semester.

A Healing Journey for Women

This group facilitates a safe, nurturing and supportive environment for women to explore traumatic life experiences and gain greater understanding of self and the world around them.  Some of the topics include: learning more about trauma, exploring how trauma has impacted you and developing coping skills.  If you'd like to participate, you MUST sign-up in advance by contacting The Counseling Center at (229) 333-5940.  Dr. Tricia Hale, Licensed Professional Counselor, facilitates this group.  Group meeting date will be determined for Spring semester. 

Path to E: A Journey to Enlightenment

This group will educate students on the benefits of meditation for wellness. Students will learn how to develop an awareness towards their individual sense of purpose. Students will be actively guided in completing meditation practices in order to better manage stress, develop psychological self-care, focus, and relaxation. If you'd like to participate, you MUST sign-up in advance by contacting The Counseling Center at (229)333-5940. Ms. Brianna Brown, Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist will facilitate this group. Group meeting date will be determined for Spring semester.

Steps to Success

The college experience is largely a time of analyzing who you are and determining what you want to achieve in life. If your use/abuse of substances threatens the goals you have established consider sharing your story in a supportive, non-judgmental environment. The inaugural 12-Step support group will be offered for VSU students this semester. If you'd like to participate, you MUST sign-up in advance by contacting The Counseling Center at (229)333-5940. Strength Through Sharing - Support Group for Faculty/Staff

Has a significant other’s abuse of substances or other addictive behaviors had a negative impact on your life? Whether a life partner, child, or parent we are often affected by the choices of others. Do you have a story of over-coming that could benefit others? Would you like to learn additional tools on how to deal with these challenges? Consider participating in a non-judgmental, supportive environment. If you'd like to participate, you MUST sign-up in advance by contacting The Counseling Center at (229)333-5940.
