Fraternity and Sorority Life

Mission Statement

The office of Greek Life’s mission is to promote student development by providing opportunities for scholarship, community service, diversity programming, campus involvement and fraternal friendship by ensuring all members a high-quality and safe undergraduate experience. At Valdosta State University it is our goal to be a nationally recognized Greek Community. To fulfill this goal, we strive for continuous improvement in all aspects of scholarship, programs, services and operations.

Currently we have 20 active Greek Chapters, each chapter does their membership intake or recruitment processes individually in the spring semester. If you would like more information on a specific chapter log onto CampusConnect (please link Valdosta.collegiatelink.net) and find the organization you are interested in. If you have additional questions please don’t hesitate to ask the Greek Life office on the third floor of the University Union in the Student Life Office.

Valdosta State University has a zero tolerance hazing policy and fully investigates every report received in an effort to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for all VSU students.

Hazing is any action taken or situation created intentionally to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, ridicule, weather on or off campus. Activities considered to be hazing include two elements: (1) coercion, either overt or covert, and (2) production of physical or mental discomfort, in either the participant(s) or spectators. Such activities suggested or ordered by a group or a member of a group to new or trial members will be considered to carry with them covert coercion even if the activity is defined as “voluntary”. Paddling in any form, physical and psychological shocks  and creation of excessive fatigue are always considered hazing. Other activities which may be considered hazing are: quests, treasure hunts, scavenger hunts, road trips, or any other such activities. Also, wearing apparel in public which is designed to humiliate the wearer; engaging in public stunts and buffoonery; morally degrading or humiliating games and activities; late work sessions which interfere with scholastic activities; and any other activities which are not consistent with the regulations of the community are considered forms of  hazing. This is not to be considered an all-inclusive list.

We believe that hazing has no place in the fraternity/sorority community nor does it in any way contribute to the environment of respect we aim to foster at Valdosta State. Any behavior that is believed to be hazing can and should be reported through our online reporting form or by calling 1-888-NOT-HAZE.

*Academic Probation: If a chapter semester Grade Point Average (GPA) falls below a 2.5, the following semester the entire chapter is on Academic Probation which includes: 1)no participation in Greek Week/Homecoming Activities, 2) no social events or events with alcohol, 3) no longer eligible to participate in the Greek Intramural League. We also require that the chapter submits an ‘Academic Recovery Plan’ to show their continued commitment to academic success.

*Social Probation: A punitive sanction that can be issued by the Greek Life Office or by any Greek Governing Council is social probation. Typically as a response to habitual or sever social violations, social probation prohibits an organization from having social events with alcohol or events that are not for the purpose of philanthropic efforts or community service.

*Cease and Desist: Cease and Desist is used as a temporary status for organizations who have a pending conduct matter that has yet to be resolved or is awaiting an appellate level decision. While on Cease and Desist, chapters should cease normal activity and desist any congregating of membership or chapter function.

*Suspension: Suspended chapters still hold a charter at Valdosta State University but are not currently being recognized as an organization in good standing for a period of time. Please note that the anticipated date that the chapter will return to good standing is listed.
