Richard Hammond
Student Recreation Center Director

Richard Hammond arrived at VSU in the Fall of 1997 in his current position. He left the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he was Assistant Director of Intramural and Club Sports from 1995 to 1997. Prior to that he held his first Professional position at Georgia Southern University as the Coordinator of Intramural Sports from 1993 to 1995. He Graduated with his masters from Southwest Texas State University now known as Texas State University in 1993. He received his Bachelor degree from the University of West Florida in 1991. 



Shawn Phippen
Associate Director, Facilities, Fitness & Aquatics

Shawn Phippen is from the golden state of California. He graduated from Kelseyville Highschool and then went on to attend Mendocino College where he received an Associates degree in Liberal Arts. He then served in the United States Navy as a medical Corpsman. There, he held the title of Command Physical Readiness Training Coordinator at Naval Hospital Charleston. He went on to complete his undergraduate and graduate degree at University of Pacific (UOP) in Stockton California. After receiving a degree in Sports Sciences with an emphasis on Exercise and Immunology he then went on to work for Campus Recreation at UOP as a graduate Assistant for Fitness and Facilities. He has 12 years of recreational experience in Campus Recreation and 8 years of teaching at the college level. While serving as Assistant Director here at VSU he is also an adjunct for the department of KSPE here at VSU.

WT Taylor
Assistant Director, CORE Outdoors

WT arrived at VSU in the summer of 2012.  Previously, he had taught outdoor recreation leadership classes, lead trips, and managed ropes courses.  He received his PH. D in Leisure Management at Ole Miss and Master of Arts in Physical Education at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX specializing in outdoor education.  WT has lead outdoor trips canoeing the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (MN), Rio Grande (TX), & Everglades (FL).  His land adventures include the Grand Canyon (AZ), Smoky Mountains (NC), and 14ers (CO) plus bicycling in England, France, and Canada. He has also planned and managed challenge courses (TN & MS) and recently obtained his Wilderness First Responder Certification (SOLO @ NCO) and ACCT Challenge Course Practitioner Level 1 Certification.  At the recent AORE Conference in Utah, he was honored to receive the Jim Rennie Leadership Award and was on the editorial committee to publish the Proceedings. He is excited about helping to take CORE Outdoors to the next level for the students, faculty/staff, and community.



Elaine Darity 
Administrative Secretary

Elaine Darity joined Campus Recreation in June of 2013. She previously worked for the Department of Financial Aid at VSU. She has attended Georgia Military College and LSU in Shreveport. She moved to Valdosta in 2007 from Montgomery, Alabama. Elaine is originally from Louisiana.
