Moving AHEAD Together Conference
The Moving AHEAD Together conference is co-hosted by the Georgia and Florida state affiliates of the Association of Higher Education and Disability. The conference speakers and events are selected to serve individuals with interest in and responsibility for providing access for students with disabilities in the postsecondary environment. The conference events are located on the campus of Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia on November 9 and 10, 2016; a convenient location for individuals in the States of Georgia and Florida and throughout the Southeast.
It is with great pleasure that the Moving AHEAD Together conference planning committee announces the following exciting and informative agenda:
The pre-conference workshop, held on the morning of Day 1, is designed for new professionals in the Disability Services field. Seasoned Disability Services Professionals (DSPs) will address topics such as documentation review, transition issues from high school to college, and models of disability. This workshop will be offered at no additional charge for conference attendees. Folks who would like a refresher are welcome to join in!
We will kick-off the official conference with a luncheon and keynote speaker. What an exciting time in the history of our country to come together! Tony Thomas (higher education attorney, political speech writer, and civil rights activist) will provide predictions and anticipations of what’s headed our way in regards to disability services after the results of the election of our nation’s president are known.
The afternoon will include an interactive session on thinking “outside of the box” to influence campus culture in an effort to break down barriers to access. The day will conclude with the GA and FL AHEAD Business Meetings.
The State of Georgia ADA Coordinator's Office is sponsoring nationally known disability lawyer and consultant, Jeanne Kincaid, to spend day 2 with us. Many of you will recognize Jeanne’s name from her advisory work with AHEAD. A special thanks to the ADA Coordinator for the Georgia State Financing & Investment Commission, Mike Galifianakis, and Assistant State ADA Coordinator, Stacey Peace, and their team for making the Moving AHEAD Together conference an excellent resource for DSPs in the State of Georgia and throughout the Southeast.
In addition to the wisdom shared by our speakers, attendees will have multiple opportunities to network with colleagues, peruse the Disability History Exhibitdisplay, and visit with vendors throughout the conference.
