Teacher Education Requirements

The student must have:

____ a major leading to teacher certification.

____ earned at least 30 semester hours.

____ earned an overall GPA of 2.5 (for all course work) for all majors (except Communication Disorders, 3.0; Art Education, 2.75).

____ passed GACE Basic Skills test ( or exempted it).
Exemption scores are:
SAT - 1000+
ACT - 43+ (Math + English)
GRE - 1030+ (Verbal + Quantitative)

____Met the Regents' Requirement by appropriate grade in ENGL 1102.

____have purchased Live Text and attended a COEHS orientation session for Live Text

____ successful completion of the appropriate "2999" course.

____ complete a criminal background check

____ purchase professional liability insurance.

Initial Certification Students

Students who have already earned a bachelor's degree and are interested in obtaining teacher certification must meet all of the requirements for admission to teacher education (listed above). (Candidates with a master's degree are exempted from GACE Basic Skills Assessment.) These students must be admitted as an undergraduate student seeking a second degree although they may choose either a certification plan or the second degree program. Initial certification students must contact the Dean's Office for information and admission for teacher certification. Those students with a bachelor's degree and seeking certification must also pass the GACE Content Assessments for their teaching area(s).
