Field Experiences in the MGE Program

Valdosta State University's teacher preparation program places a heavy emphasis upon authentic school-based experiences in order to immerse candidates in educational philosophy and best practices. A significant amount of the candidates' education is in the field with master teachers (mentors) who have volunteered to be trained to work with pre-service teachers. Additionally, each candidate has a departmental supervisor who observes him/her in the field during senior program.

In Middle Grades, field experience begins in the candidates' Area F core with an overview of various aspects of the learning environment. Candidates continue to expand their professional competencies through continued field experiences in MGED 3990, 3991, and MGED 4620. Candidates must also complete 40 hours of community service prior to graduation.

Senior Block 

Candidates must have a 2.5 GPA and have completed their concentration area courses to be eligible for senior block.

Candidates enrolled in senior block will take MGED 4000, MGED 4030, MGED 4050, MGED 4620, and MGED 3110. Student teaching, MGED 4790 and MGED 4800, will be the following semester. Candidates will be assigned to professional development sites for one semester. A pre-service teacher will be assigned to a team and a lead mentor at one of the professional development sites. Candidates will work in classrooms for a minimum of four weeks during first semester senior block, teaching in two academic areas.

Student Teaching - MGED 4790

Student teaching is the culminating professional experience and is scheduled during the last term of university enrollment. The requirements to student teach are:

  1. admission to teacher education
  2. overall GPA of at least 2.5
  3. completion of all coursework
  4. completion of criminal background check
  5. current liability insurance.


Candidates are not permitted to take coursework concurrently with student teaching. Applications must be submitted to the Dean’s Office by the announced deadlines; deadline dates are posted on the College of Education website. Student teaching applications are available in the Dean’s Office and in departmental offices. Student teaching is not offered in the summer.

Students who participate in field-based experiences are required to be covered by professional liability insurance.

Concentration Areas

Two teaching areas of concentration are required. The  concentration area must be selected from language arts, reading, mathematics, science or social studies. Candidates should consult with advisors on required and recommended courses for each area of concentration.  Courses that are not listed for concentration areas will not be accepted toward completion of degree requirements..
