The Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice at Valdosta State University offers a Master of Science in Sociology designed for students to obtain advanced skills in research design; community development and change; data collection, management, and analysis; and working with diverse and vulnerable populations.

Students entering our MS Sociology program come to us from a variety of majors including Sociology and Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Interdisciplinary Studies, Biology, and Psychology.

Since the beginning of the Valdosta State University Master of Science in Sociology program in 1973, more than 450 graduates are practicing sociology and using their knowledge and skills to improve lives, communities, and society. Students earning an MS in Sociology are prepared to obtain careers in a variety of fields, advance in their current profession, or pursue doctoral studies.

Our recent graduates find that their MS Sociology degree has provided strong preparation for careers in human and social services, local government, business and marketing, and as secondary and college instructors. We highlight the careers of our recent graduates on our Sociology at Valdosta State Facebook page.

The quality of the program is its most important strength with small classes, excellent instructors, and the opportunity for applied, experiential, and service learning. Graduate students in our program regularly work closely with faculty on research projects which they present at state and regional conferences and the Graduate Research Symposium. Beyond research, many engage in community activism and development and serve in leadership roles in our vibrant Sociology Club.

At the heart of the practice of sociology is its commitment to use the insights and methods of the discipline to solve problems and change lives. We welcome your questions and interest.
