Dr. J. Richard Carter, Professor, received B.S. [Zoology] and M.S. [Botany] degrees from Mississippi State University and the Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University.  In addition to having taught at Valdosta State for 40 years [19842024], Dr. Carter has served as Curator of the Valdosta State University Herbarium.  His research focuses on the flora of the Georgia coastal plain and the taxonomy of vascular plants, involving field-based inventories of areas of conservation significance, field surveys for rare and endangered species, taxonomy of sedges and other vascular plant groups, and herbarium curation.  In support of his research and the herbarium, he has received numerous grants and awards from various sources, including the National Science Foundation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Georgia Department of Natural Resources.  Dr. Carter is a member of the Southeastern Flora Team contributing to the Flora of the Southeastern United States, a regional reviewer for the Flora of North America, an associate of Tall Timbers Research Station where he holds a Henry Beadel Fellowship [2018present], and a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London
