In the Keys, students enjoy camping outdoors and conducting research. HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE TAKES ON A WHOLE NEW MEANING During Spring Break, Dr. Tom Manning and his Chemistry students travel to the Florida Keys for a research trip. While in the Keys, his class focuses on coral restoration and the development of new bacteria to treat soft tissue sarcoma. The work his students have put toward treating soft tissue sarcoma has led them to develop new cancer drugs and antibiotics that have now entered pre-clinical trials. Learn about the research that students are conducting in the Keys. valdosta.edu/keysresearch This trip is less about managing my class and more about students getting out there learning and exploring. I provide the equipment, the facilities, and some guidance, but the rest is on them. This is where memories are made and real growth happens.” - Dr. Tom Manning, Chemistry Professor “ Where our students’ research is making a difference.
