Welcome to New Students

Dear ROTC Student,

Welcome to VSU’s Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC), Detachment 172!  We are delighted you have decided to pursue a commission through our Air Force ROTC Program. The cadre (staff) and cadets of Detachment 172 will do everything possible to ensure you receive a well-rounded education in officership, management, and leadership that will benefit you as a future officer in the United States Air Force.

We are providing a Cadet Orientation to ensure that you are qualified to be in the AFROTC Program. The following information is provided for your reference:

  • When: 12 August 2017

Classes start the week of August 14th.

At the orientation, you will have an opportunity to meet current cadets, new classmates, and begin developing supportive relationships to help you through your college and AFROTC career. Time will be set aside to complete routine paperwork and answer many of the questions you have about this exciting step toward your future.

To make this an efficient process, please bring the following items:

  • Original Birth Certificate with a raised seal (or proof of citizenship if not by birth)*

  • Sports Physical (completed by family physician) that has to have the following statement (if not on a AF Form 28) "Member is cleared to perform AFROTC PT"

* We’ll make a copy of the document(s) and return it before you leave

Dress Code: Please wear khaki pants, white "polo type" shirt tucked in, brown/black belt and closed toed brown/black shoes. Men's hair must not exceed 1 1/4 inch in bulk and women's hair must not exceed past their collar.

Parking in front of Barrow Hall is limited to Cadre (staff) members only. You may park beside the Business School, on the street in front of the hospital or in the parking garage by the hospital. (Adjust your time accordingly)

This is NOT an orientation for parents -- Parents are welcome to stay in the Cadet Lounge on the second floor of Barrow Hall until orientation is over.

Once you have received an email invitation to the New Cadet Orientation, please respond via email to let us know if you will or will not be attending the orientation. If you are unable to attend, you’ll need to make arrangements to complete your paperwork with us during the first week of school. Again, welcome to AFROTC and Det 172! We’re looking forward to the chance to prepare you for the world’s most respected Air Force!

As an added bonus, here is a document that contains workouts that will prepare you for the upcoming physical fitness activities in our program.
