Master of Education Degree at Valdosta State University
Students receiving the Master of Education degree at Valdosta State take classes in the Dewar College of Education. Faculty members engage in scholarly pursuits of research and service and encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning process. The Master of Education degree programs emphasize interdisciplinary and inter-institutional collaboration, and current technologies are fully integrated into the learning process. About the Master of Education Degree Curriculum
M.Ed. in Adult and Career Education
The Master of Education program in adult and career education includes three areas of emphasis: workforce education and development, career and technical education, and business education and information technology. Students in the program research situations in the field and apply concepts covered to actual teaching and program development.
M.Ed. in Adult and Career Education - Business Education and Information Technology Option
The Master of Education program in adult and career education with a business education and information technology option introduces teachers to a broad range of instructional strategies and technologies that promote student learning. Students in the program analyze student, classroom and school performance data and make data-driven decisions about strategies for teaching and learning so that all students learn.
M.Ed. in Communication Disorders
The Master of Education in communication disorders equips students with the skills needed to provide prevention, evaluation and intervention services for clients of all ages with a variety of communication disorders. Students conduct basic research and applied research with the goal of becoming certified speech-language pathologists, teachers and/or research scientists. Graduates of the program are eligible for a service certificate and the Certificate of Clinical Competence awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, which enables them to work in a variety of public and private settings.
M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction in Accomplished Teaching
The Master of Education program in curriculum and instruction in accomplished teaching is offered through Georgia ONmyLINE, the online education program of the University System of Georgia. The program is a collaboration between Valdosta State University, Georgia Southern University and Columbus State University, and graduate faculty members from each college teach the online courses. The program is based on six domains outlined by the Georgia Framework for Accomplished Teaching, including content and curriculum, knowledge of students and their learning, learning environments, assessment, planning and instruction, and professionalism.
M.Ed. in Special Education - Deaf and Hard of Hearing – 5th Year Program
The Master of Education degree in special education – deaf and hard of hearing – 5th year program is for Valdosta State students with a Bachelor of Science in Education pre-professional degree in the area of deaf and hard of hearing studies. These students have the option to complete a 5th-year master’s program to earn initial certification. Students in the program demonstrate skills in assessment, instructional strategies, use of technology and monitoring/modifying instruction during observed and supervised teaching episodes. Students demonstrate content knowledge by passing the state-required content assessment in deaf education.
M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education
Students in the Master of Education program in early childhood education hone their skills and develop the ability to deal with the intricate aspects of the teaching experience. Through a rigorous curriculum, students gain a comprehensive understanding of the dominant theories of child development and learning. Students focus their studies on research, learning, educational assessment, ethics and law and learn how to create environments that address the intellectual, social, emotional, physical and cultural needs of young children.
M.Ed. in Early Childhood Special Education
The Master in Education program in early childhood special education is a continuation of the pre-professional Bachelor of Science in Education program. The degree results in initial certification in the discipline, giving graduates the ability to teach in early childhood classrooms or special education classrooms serving students in Pre-K through 5th grade.
M.Ed. in Educational Leadership
The Master of Education in educational leadership program includes two options. The public school leadership (P-12) option prepares candidates to be school administrators and teacher leaders. Candidates become eligible for Georgia NL-5 certification by completing the master’s program and by obtaining a passing score on both parts of the GACE Educational Leadership Content Assessment. The higher education leadership option prepares candidates to be administrators in institutions of higher education.
M.Ed. in Instructional Technology
The Master of Education in instructional technology degree includes two options.
The library media technology option prepares candidates to be school media specialists. The program results in Georgia S-5 certification. The technology applications option prepares candidates to be technology coordinators or instructional technologists in a variety of contexts, including public schools, business, industry, government, the military, health fields and higher education.
M.Ed. in Middle Grades Education
The Master in Education in middle grades education is designed for certified teachers who seek advanced knowledge and skills for the middle grades classroom. Students in the program refine their instructional skills and develop the techniques necessary to become master teachers. Students must select two concentrations of study from the areas of language arts, mathematics, science, reading or social studies.
M.Ed. in Middle Grades Math and Science
The Master of Education in middle grades math and science degree is an advanced degree that gives in-service middle grades teachers the opportunity to pursue advanced training in their teaching fields. Current certification in middle grades math and/or science is required for admission. The program is offered through Georgia ONmyLINE, the online education program of the University System of Georgia, and top faculty members from Valdosta State and North Georgia College and State University teach the courses.
M.Ed. in Physical Education
The Master in Education program in physical education is designed to meet the needs of today’s teachers and coaches. The program includes comprehensive and non-compartmentalized integrated instructional units, giving students the flexibility to efficiently and quickly respond to the changing needs of today’s schools and the community. Students are taught in six-hour educational units that utilize traditional classroom instruction, in addition to completing self-guided study and engaging in other methods of learning.
M.Ed. in Reading Education
The Master of Education program in reading education is designed for teachers in Pre-K through 12th grade and prepares students to work as teachers of reading. The curriculum includes literacy development, processes, instruction and research. Graduates of the program are required to take the GACE in Reading Education. The department also offers a reading endorsement, an online program specifically for teachers in Pre-K through 12th grade who want to add expertise to their current State of Georgia Teacher Certification.
M.Ed. in School Counseling
The Master of Education in school counseling prepares students to become school counselors who are eligible for certification by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Students in the program become scholars and practitioners and are able to think critically and apply their knowledge with skill and compassion. Students are required to satisfy all Georgia Professional Standards Commission requirements for certification as a component part of the degree program.
M.Ed. in Secondary Education
The Master of Education in secondary education program for grades 6 through 12 includes programs in English, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, history or political science. The program emphasizes the development of the pedagogical, management and curricular knowledge and skills needed to become effective teachers, and students are expected to develop abilities to deal with the intricate aspects of the teaching experiences.
M.Ed. in Special Education – Deaf Education
The Master of Education in special education - deaf education program prepares students for the discipline by teaching them professional, state and institutional standards and introducing them to instructional strategies that draw upon content and pedagogical knowledge and skills. Students in the program learn to analyze educational research findings and incorporate new information into their practice, make appropriate adjustments to instruction, monitor student learning and have a positive effect on learning for all students.
