Valdosta State offers three programs of study that lead to the Doctor of Education degree. The Doctor of Education program in adult and career education prepares students to work with adult learners in the field of career education in both secondary and postsecondary education settings and private workforce education and government agency contexts. The Doctor of Education degree in curriculum and instruction, which is offered in hybrid and online formats, is for experienced practitioners in a variety of instructional fields who seek to build a foundation in curricular and instructional issues facing schools, school systems, institutions of higher education and other educational agencies. The Doctor of Education in leadership program prepares doctoral candidates to assume active leadership roles and to become effective, ethical and research-oriented leaders in P-12 schools, universities and other organizations.

About the Doctor of Education Degree Curriculum

Ed.D. in Adult and Career Education

The Doctor of Education in adult and career education program provides advanced, professional training for educators pursuing careers in teaching and leadership, career education or related fields. Doctoral candidates learn to work with adult learners and students in career education fields at the secondary and postsecondary levels in both public and private sectors. Throughout the course of the program, students engage in focused research and theory and write discipline-related articles for publication.

Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction

The Doctor of Education program in curriculum and instruction develops students’ understanding of effective instructional systems and application of theoretical foundations in curriculum and instruction. Doctoral candidates research, design, develop, implement, evaluate and disseminate innovative educational practices in a variety of learning environments. Students in the program create an electronic portfolio that includes work samples and artifacts that document mastery of program objectives. Graduates of the program have the ability to engage in focused inquiry by researching a topic, evaluating relevant literature, writing a comprehensive dissertation and presenting the results of their study.

Ed.D. in Leadership

The Doctor of Education program in leadership prepares doctoral candidates for leadership opportunities in schools and other organizations. The program, which is designed for P-12 educators, college or university personnel or leaders in other organizations, seeks to develop effective, ethical and diverse leaders who will positively influence, lead and transform the organizations they serve. Cognates may be earned in executive/organizational leadership, teacher leadership, curriculum leadership and technology leadership.
