Books Delivered to a Library Near You

  • You can borrow books from other universities in the University System of Georgia through a service called GIL Express. When you place the request, you can request pickup at the library closest to you. For those of you in Macon, that would be Macon State College. If you're in Kennesaw, that would be Kennesaw State University.
  • Start by finding a book you'd like in the GIL Universal Catalog. This catalog searches the library holdings of all public universities in Georgia. In addition to the search feature on the start page, try the keyword and exact searches to see what meets your needs.
  • When you see a book that will be helpful to you, click on "GIL Express Request" at the top of the page.
  • For example, do an exact search for title: American sign language : shattering the myth. You can see from the information given about this book that six libraries in Georgia own it, but VSU is not one of them. If you would like to read it, click on GIL Express Request.
  • First time instructions:
    • Select Valdosta State University as your Home Institution
    • Enter your VSU student ID number. This begins with 870 and is 9 digits long.
    • Leave the PIN number field empty.
    • Enter your last name.
    • Click on "Get my PIN" below the login button.
    • Your GIL PIN will be sent to your @Valdosta.edu email address.
  • Once you have your PIN:
    • Select VSU as your Home Institution
    • Enter your VSU ID number
    • Enter your PIN
    • Enter your last name
    • Click on Logon to My Account
    • The next screen will say "Borrow item through GIL Express". Click on OK.
    • Enter your VSU ID number in the "Enter Your Patron Barcode/Library ID from Home Library" field.
    • Select a pickup library. If you live in Lowndes County and come to VSU regularly, leaving VSU as your pickup library is probably best. If you live in Macon you might prefer picking the book up at Macon State College, or if you're in Kennesaw at Kennesaw State University.
    • Click on submit request.
    • You will receive an email when your item is available for pickup.
  • The login process is illustrated for you here.
  • You'll find general information about the GIL Express service here.
