History of the Department:    The Valdosta State Political Science Department is under the College of Arts and Sciences.  The Political Science Department began as part of the History Department with Dr. William Gabard as head until 1972.  It was a provisional Department of Political Science in 1972 with Dr. William Morrow as provisional head.  Though the department gained full departmental status in 1973, Dr. Morrow remained provisional head.  In later 1973, he became department head and served in that capacity until 1977.  Dr. James A. Betka served as head from 1977 to 1986, and Dr. James Peterson has been head from 1986 until the present.  The department teaches Political Science, International Relations, Law and Public Administration.

Scope and Content:  The Collection is not comprehensive but contains scattered  holdings. It includes recruitment and program brochures.  A copy of  Czechoslovak History Newsletter edited by Dr. Paterson is included.  Papers on Social Security Claims, Employment Discrimination, and Workers Compensation, written by local lawyers Luke E. Closson, Jr., Roy W. Copeland, Robert M. Clyatt, and John Kent Edwards are included.  The lawyers had previously been students at Valdosta State College, and Copeland was a faculty member in the department.
