Ensure that your children are safe and comfortable in the water for all your upcoming summer activities!

Lessons are available for ages 3 and up. (For reasons of public health and safety per VSU Student Recreation Center policy, children must be fully toilet trained.) There is no upper age limit. Classes consist of five 35-minute sessions during one week, and the cost is $65. (Week of June 30 - July 3 is a 4-day week for $54.) Class size is limited to 3 students. Classes will be broadly grouped into "Non-Swimmers" and "Swimmers".

Classes will be taught by  Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructors. The instructor will work with each individual at his or her skill level. Our swimming instructors follow the six levels of the Red Cross Learn to Swim program. Visit the Red Cross website to view and download a detailed chart of the swimming and water safety skills involved in the Learn to Swim program.

We will have some sessions designated for ages 12 - Adults at beginning and elementary levels of swimming ability. Look for dates and times on our schedule.

All swimming lessons will be conducted in the indoor pool at the VSU Student Recreation Center on Sustella Avenue. The advantages of this location include: Pool is heated! The water is maintained at 82 degrees. Plenty of parking in the lot and parking deck behind the building! Family changing rooms are available.

Directions and instructions will be sent with your receipt. The bottom of your receipt serves as a parking permit. You may park in Reserved, Staff, or Student spots in the lot surrounding the Student Recreation Center or in the parking deck. Please do not park in spaces marked Buses, Service Vehicles, Handicapped, or Visitor Parking.

Please Note: Due to the limited spaces available for each session, registrations for time slots will not be accepted via email, fax, or regular mail. Walk-in and telephone reservations only, please! Payment must accompany registration; we cannot reserve spots in swimming sessions until payment is received.

Parents are encouraged to form groups with their children or friends to fill classes and ease transportation constraints. For more information click on the links above or call (229) 245-6484 or email Sue Bailey.

Swim Lesson Inclement Weather Cancellation Policy:

The Student Recreation Center Pool is equipped with a storm meter. When the meter detects lightning within an 8 mile radius of the pool, university policy dictates that the pool must be closed for a minimum of 30 minutes. There is a danger of injury from a lightning strike because the pool is not grounded.

Every effort will be made to reschedule sessions cancelled due to lightning and will be scheduled to best meet the group's availability. We cannot guarantee that makeup sessions will meet the individual's needs and makeups will not be conducted individually. Please talk to your instructor in the event a session is postponed or cancelled due to inclement weather.

If you have questions about this policy, please contact Sue Bailey at 229-245-6484.

If you need to call the Student Recreation Center after 5:30 PM, the after hours phone number is 229-245-4306.

Refund and Transfer Policies:

  • Full refunds, less $5 per registration, will be given with notification by phone or in writing by 4 PM on the Wednesday before a session begins.  No refunds for cancellations after 4 PM on Wednesday, however you may send a substitute.

  • Transfers to another session will be considered as cancellations and must be requested by 4 PM on the Wednesday prior to the start of the session.
