Excellence in Teaching Criteria

The award committee will look for persuasive evidence that nominees display the following:

    • A strong and consistent commitment to teaching and learning. This commitment might be demonstrated through activities designed to advance the quality and practice of teaching and learning, to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and/or global and multicultural understanding.
    • Effective teaching strategies to enhance student learning, including, but not limited to innovative uses of technology, active learning, learning communities, student portfolios, and assessment.
    • A strong commitment to fostering the academic success of VSU students through interaction with students outside of the classroom (e.g., advising, mentoring, recruiting, etc.).

The award for Excellence in Teaching asks applicants to demonstrate innovative ways to teach theories/concepts/skills in their discipline. Applicants will need to discuss their teaching philosophy and pedagogy, and show evidence of student learning to support their claims of being an innovative teacher. That evidence might be in a variety of forms, but does not have include peer-reviewed publications. The award for Excellence in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is different. Applicants need to show that they have used their classroom as a research site, where they have conducted studies which then were peer reviewed and published which show the efficacy of the innovations used. Applicants who have not published on their teaching and how it has impacted their students' learning are not likely to be successful in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning category.

The university recipient of this award will serve as VSU’s nominee for the Regents’ Teaching Excellence Award.

Excellence in Research Criteria

The award committee will look for persuasive evidence that nominees display the following:

    • A strong and consistent record of publication/presentation/research/creative-artistic work.

Nominations and Selection Process in Academic Colleges/Divisions

Each academic college/division will develop its own nomination and selection process that will ensure a fair and consistent evaluation of all nominees. That selection process should be clearly delineated on the college/division website and should result in the selection of a nominee to receive the college/division award. Once the college has its nomination for each Presidential Excellence award, the dean (or the dean’s designee) will write a letter which further discusses the nominee’s criteria for meeting guidelines for the specified award.
