VSU Remembers Martin Luther King Jr. with a Day of Service

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University’s Office of Social Equity will host service opportunities on Monday, Jan. 19, in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The Office of Social Equity encourages students to “realize the goals of Dr. King by observing the holiday as a day of service — a day on, not a day off.” To assist in those efforts, students are asked to participate in the following activities:

• Volunteer at Heritage Healthcare at Lakehaven from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Heritage Healthcare at Lakehaven is a 90-bed nursing home facility located at 410 E. Northside Drive in Valdosta. Students should sign up by contacting the Office of Social Equity by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15. Volunteers may log service hours in Campus Connect.

• Participate in a commemorative march at 4 p.m. The commemorative march will begin at the University Center fountain and end at West Hall and is hosted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

• Donate items in need at The Haven. The Haven is a non-profit organization that provides 24-hour temporary shelter and services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Donations can be taken to Seago House, home of the Office of Social Equity, on North Patterson Street, next to Martin Hall and across from the University Center. Donations will be accepted until noon on Friday, Jan. 16. Items requested for donation include toiletry items, twin-sized sheets and comforters, new or gently used clothing, pillows, laundry detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, towels and wash cloths, feminine hygiene products, diapers and baby supplies, and underwear and socks for women and children, all sizes

A Martin Luther King Jr. Day panel discussion will be announced at a later date.

Contact Carmen Guess, Office of Social Equity graduate assistant, at (229) 333-5463 or ccguess@valdosta.edu to sign up or to learn more.
