VSU Alumna, Supporter Celebrates 100th Birthday

Valdosta State University President William J. McKinney honored alumna Ruby Sullivan's 100th birthday on April 24 with a proclamation recognizing her 67 years of teaching. Sullivan attended Georgia State Womans College, now Valdosta State, from 1930 to 1932 and at the age of 18 began teaching. In 2012, Sullivan established the Ruby and John Sullivan Education Scholarship within VSU's Dewar College of Education and Human Services. The scholarship is named for Sullivan and her late son, John Sullivan, a 1972 graduate of Valdosta State. The scholarship provides financial assistance to education majors with a demonstrated need who intend to enter the teaching profession upon graduation, and are high school graduates from a Georgia county where the poverty rate is 50 percent or more than the state's poverty average. Joining Sullivan to celebrate her birthday was scholarship recipient Vontessa A. Kendall, of Newton, Ga.
