VSU Jazz Ensemble Performs Sept. 24

VALDOSTA — The Valdosta State University Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of David Springfield, will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24, on the Whitehead Auditorium stage. Admission is free of charge. Faculty, staff, students, and members of the surrounding community are encouraged to attend. 

The program will include jazz arrangements of popular music by The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Alan Menken, Bon Iver, and Janelle Monae, noted Springfield, an assistant professor of jazz piano in VSU’s Department of Music and director of VSU’s Jazz Studies Program. 

Jazz Ensemble members are Fernando Chavez, Landan Frazier, Joshua Duncan, Brennan Short, and Curtis Nichols on saxophone; Brian Summerlin, Sage Khan, Deborahlea Smith, and Eduardo Farias on trumpet; Brian Dodd, Chandler Hill, Josh Watford, and Zach Jones on trombone; and John Neely on guitar, Jessica Holmes on piano, John Tyler on bass, and Anthony Bussey and Travis King on drums.

Upcoming VSU Jazz events include the annual Pops in the Park fundraiser at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, and more free, public concerts by the Student Jazz Combos at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 4; the New Jazz Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5; and the Jazz Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21.

Whitehead Auditorium is located on the first floor of the VSU Fine Arts Building, at the intersection of Brookwood Drive and Patterson Street.
