VSU Spring Senior Art Exhibition Runs April 14-29

VALDOSTA — The Valdosta State University Department of Art will kick off its 2013 Spring Senior Art Exhibition with an opening reception in the Fine Arts Gallery from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 14. The Student Jazz Combo will perform.

“I’m terrifically excited about the show,” said Caitlin Jockell, 22, who will graduate in May with a Bachelor of Arts in art. “We have a lot of great pieces, everything from graphic design to ceramics to jewelry to painting and drawing. We have something for everyone.”

A native of Flowery Branch, Jockell studied painting, aqueous media, and ceramics at VSU. She will spend the summer studying with Betsi Burgess, who is well known for applying paint to backer board and ceramic tile. She hopes to learn a few marketing skills and new painting techniques from the artist often referred to as the Florida Dream Painter.

The title of the 2013 Spring Senior Art Exhibit is Senior X: Unchained. Jockell said that it is representative of the 11 VSU graduates — Takira Borden, James Brantley, Michael Brown, Jannae Bryant, Austin Davis, Kimberly Jaimes, Caitlin Jockell, Olivia La Selva, Zachary Mickleboro, Arianna Scott, and Jessica Sharp — being released into the real world, leaving the academic world behind.

All of the students in the show are art majors at VSU; most are graduating in May with either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Fine Arts. The show will run through April 29.

The VSU Fine Arts Gallery is located on the first floor of the Fine Arts Building, which is located on the corner of Brookwood Drive and Oak Street. It is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday.
