U.S. Poet Laureate Philip Levine to Speak April 17

VALDOSTA -- As part of National Poetry Month, Valdosta State University’s Department of English is sponsoring the contemporary writers series. Pulitzer Prize winner and 2011-2012 U.S. Poet Laureate, Philip Levine, will speak at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17th, in Whitehead Auditorium. Lynn Chandhok, Anhinga Press’ Philip Levine Prize winner, will be the opening speaker.

To mark National Poetry Month, Odum Library has a new exhibit up featuring work by Levine and by VSU authors. Individuals can view books of poetry by Philip Levine from Odum Library’s collection as part of the poetry at VSU exhibit, which is located in the first floor display cases on the library’s north side. There you will also see many collections of poetry by contemporary authors alongside classic poets such as Shakespeare, Wordsworth and Dickinson.

National Poetry Month, sponsored by the Academy of American Poets, also promotes Poem in Your Pocket Day on April 18. Individuals are encouraged to carry a poem in their pocket to share with others.
