VSU SIFE Hosts iCan Week

VALDOSTA -- VSU SIFE members are hosting iCan Week from Thursday, Feb. 16 - Saturday, Feb. 25 to help fight hunger by participating in the Campbell’s Let’s Can Hunger Challenge. This challenge is a competition sponsored by Campbell Soup Company that challenges SIFE teams in Canada, Mexico and the United States to raise awareness of hunger, translate awareness to action in the form of urgent hunger relief and empower those in need to defeat the cycle of hunger.

Teams are challenged to develop a hunger awareness marketing plan that compels their community to provide urgent hunger relief through the team’s food and fund drives. Presently, VSU SIFE has raised over 2,500 of their 25,000 pound goal. To achieve this goal, they are asking local businesses to make a contribution of none perishable food items or money to be donated to the Salvation Army and/or America’s Second Harvest in the name of Let’s Can Hunger.

There will be many different activities to participate in throughout the week including:

Thursday, Feb. 16 - Blazer Basketball Game
Community members are invited to bring can goods to the Blazer/Lady Blazer basketball game for free admission. VSU students who bring in can goods will be entered into a raffle drawing

Saturday, Feb. 18 - iCan Volunteer
SIFE students and dining services will volunteer at the Second Harvest Food Bank from 10 a.m. - 2p.m.

Monday, Feb. 20 - iCan Build
Organizations will build structures out of canned foods at 5 p.m. in Palms Quad.

Tuesday, Feb. 21 - iCan Help Forum
This forum will educate students about Hunger Awareness at 6 p.m. in the University Center Cypress Room. Students will have a chance to experience real life hunger affects.

Wednesday, Feb. 22 - iCan Perform Talent Show
Bailey Science Center Room 3009 at 6 p.m.

Thursday, Feb. 23 - iCan Cook-Off
Organizations will create a meal out of can/dry goods in Palms Dining Center. Setup is at 12 p.m., and kickoff is at 1 p.m. This is also discount day at Palms! Bring 5 cans into Palms Dining during lunch (11 a.m. - 2 p.m.) and pay $5 to eat during fried chicken Thursday.

Friday, Feb. 24 - Food Drop at Ora Lee West Housing Authority
The Second Harvest Food Bank will be donating tons of food to the local residents. Setup at 12 p.m., and kickoff is from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 25 - Sam’s Club Hungry Hearts Kick-Off
Setup is at 9 a.m., and kickoff is from 10 a.m - 2 p.m.
