VSU Hosts Parents Weekend Sept. 11

VALDOSTA - Valdosta State University will host the 2009 Parents Weekend Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-12.

The weekend kicks-off with registration from 6-7 p.m. Friday night followed by a movie at Palms quad at 9 p.m. Families are encouraged to bring blankets for a fun cinematic experience together under the stars.
Saturday's full schedule includes an academic expo from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the UC Cypress Room. Faculty members and administrators will answer questions and discuss the attributes of VSU's many programs of student, academic resources and other education opportunities.

From 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., parents and students can stop by the U.C. Theatre to have their likeness captured on keepsake photo buttons.

Two lunch sessions, both featuring barbecue and fried chicken with traditional southern-style sides, are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. and 12:15-1 p.m., both in the UC Magnolia Room. Lunch is $10 per person, limited to 300 people, who must pre-register and pre-pay for the event.

After lunch, guests are invited to participate in planetarium shows to witness early autumn's planets, stars and deep-sky objects as well as discuss the mythological stories behind the most familiar constellations of stars in the night sky. Attendance limited to 47 for each show, including 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., and on a first-come, first-served basis. Please request tickets at check-in on Friday. Library tours are also available at these times. Guests are invited to explore 100 years of VSU history at the VSU museum and archives, which boasts displays of unique items from 5,000-year-old Babylonian clay tablets to the long, wool uniforms worked by students in the early 1900s.

At 7 p.m., parents and students can cheer on the VSU Blazers as they battle the Southern Arkansas Muleriders at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. Tickets are $5 for parents when their student presents a valid student ID. Guests must also pre-register and prepay for this event.

Additionally, the University Bookstore is open for parents and students use their discount coupons, provided in a keepsake tote bag, to shop for academic needs and VSU merchandise from 1-7 p.m.

Parents must preregister and prepay the $25 fee to enjoy the weekend. Cost includes all free events as well as a 2009 Parents Weekend keepsake tote bag. The last day to register is Friday, Sept. 4.
