VSU Reaches High School Girls During Annual SK Day

VALDOSTA - Valdosta State University Department of Mathematics and Computer Science will host the fourteenth annual Sonya Kovalevsky High School Mathematics Day from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, in Powell Hall.

The event encourages high school teachers and sophomore and junior female students to consider mathematics as an appropriate career field for women while assisting students with the difficult transition from high school to college math. The day will include hands-on activities, workshops, lectures and a math contest for students.

Dr. Denise Taunton Reid and Mrs. Pat Bezona of the Math and Computer Science Department are co-hosting this event in honor of Sonya Kovalevsky, a Russian mathematician who made important contributions to calculus and became the first women to earn a doctorate in mathematics.

Call Denise Reid at (229) 333-5784 or visit http://www.valdosta.edu/mathcs/events/SKDays.shtml for more information about the event.
