VSU Housing Awarded at Conference

Valdosta - The Office of Housing and Residence Life was recently awarded two awards at the Georgia Housing Officers conference in Athens.

Associate Director Leighia Hammond received the Outstanding Professional award, which is bestowed upon professionals who have served in university housing for four or more years. Hammond began working at Valdosta State in 1999 as a Residence Hall Director. After leaving in 2002, she returned in 2005 to serve as the associate director of Housing and Residence Life.

The Office of Housing and Residence Life received the Gee Whiz award, which recognizes an innovative program, project or service sponsored by a housing and residence life department. VSU's department was honored because of its new birthday recognition program that was initiated last fall to ensure residents received more than birthday cards. The new program sends each resident a birthday postcard during the month of his or her birthday, which can be exchanged for a candy bar of the student's choice at the housing office.
