VSU Mass Media Wins SCJ Awards

VALDOSTA - Valdosta State University’s Mass Media department and its students recently received national awards from the Society for Collegiate Journalists (SCJ). SCJ is comprised of 143 collegiate mass media and broadcast journalism programs from across the nation.

In Television Broadcast News, Ashley Dudley placed second; Sam Mount placed third and Allison Phillips received an honorable mention; in Broadcast Features, Sam Mount placed third; and in Television Sports, Neal Folger placed second with the “Blazer Sports Report,” Brock Wetherbee placed third with “UAM vs. VSU Football” and Neal Folger received an honorable mention for “ATU vs. VSU Football.”

The seven awards for this year brings the department to 19 total national awards earned since 2004, according to VSU Mass Media professor Frank Barnas. In addition to these SCJ awards, students have also received national recognition from the Broadcast Education Association and the National Broadcasting Society for their work in news, sports and video production.
