Cawthon Wins Charles McDaniel Teaching Scholarship

Emily Cawthon, an Early Childhood Education major in her senior year at Valdosta State University, is the recipient of the Charles McDaniel Teacher Scholarship. Cawthon, who carries a perfect 4.0 GPA, was selected for the scholarship for her experience of working with students with disabilities, tutoring and volunteering in local elementary schools, and for her strong desire to change tomorrow through the children of today.

Cawthon is a graduate of Perry High School and the daughter of Betty Douglas of Elko, Ga. She is currently student teaching at Garrison Pilcher Elementary School in the Thomas County School System. Upon graduation with her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education in December 2005, Cawthon hopes to find an elementary teaching position in the local area.

The Charles McDaniel Scholarship Program seeks to recognize and financially assist outstanding college juniors and seniors who are Georgia public high school graduates and are now pursuing teaching degrees at one of the 35 public colleges and universities in Georgia. The scholarship was established by the friends and family of Dr. Charles McDaniel, in honor and memory of his contributions as the former State Superintendent of School for the State of Georgia.
