VSU Kicks Off Ninth Annual African American Studies Lecture Series

Valdosta State University will host its ninth annual African-American Studies lecture series in the Biology/Chemistry auditorium beginning on Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. The theme is, ?Telling History: African American Men Ordering the Universe.?

The first lecture, ?The African American Male Telling It Like It Is,? will feature Dr. John Gaston, Dean of VSU College of the Arts, performing ?The Brothers.?

The second lecture, ?African American Male Artists: Ordering the Universe,? will be on Feb. 10, at 7 p.m. The Gourd Master Sam X, a guest lecturer and other artists of international acclaim are scheduled to give presentations. Aaron Reed, one of VSU's artists, will also display his work.

The last feature of the lecture series will be on Feb. 27, at 7 p.m. A play entitled ?The Meeting? will be presented by Pin Point Theater. Written by Jeff Stetson, ?The Meeting? received a Louis B. Mayer Award, eight NAACP Theatre Awards, and six New York AUDELCO nominations. It has completed tours throughout the United States, Europe, and will now play at VSU.
