Valdosta State University is offering a fresh graduate degree for people pursuing a career in higher education.

Valdosta State University is offering a fresh graduate degree for people pursuing a career in higher education. "This program is ideal for anybody working in higher education, or anybody who wants to work in higher education in a non-faculty role," Bass said. "This degree is excellent preparation for someone who wants to work in student affairs or any academic support area-or in any administrative position where a master's degree is appropriate."

Bass said one of the strengths of the new degree program is its all-encompassing approach

"It carries the basics that everyone in higher education should know, and it also allows some flexibility," Bass said. "By judicious selection of electives, one can shape the program to his or her individual needs."

The degree is 36 semester hours in length and requires two field experiences, or internships in the higher education environment, Bass said. Students learn about higher education structure, philosophy, theory, organization, finance and resource management, among other topics.

"Higher education is a very complex, changing environment," Bass said. "This new degree is designed to give students the tools they need to be successful, contributing members of that environment."
